The Great Barrier Reef Climate Change Action Plan 2007–2012 (Action Plan) represents a concerted effort by governments, industries and communities to identify and test strategies that can help give the Great Barrier Reef the best chance of coping with climate change. Under four major themes (Targeted science, a Resilient Great Barrier Reef, Adaptation of industries and communities, and Reducing climate footprints) the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) has worked with a wide range of partners and stakeholders to better understand the nature and scale of climate change threats, to identify response strategies and to take local action to reduce vulnerability. The last five years have placed the GBRMPA at the leading edge of efforts to understand, test and implement adaptation options to help the Great Barrier Reef cope with climate change. We have been fortunate to have had this opportunity, yet there is much more to be done if we are to protect the Reef, its heritage and its cultural values for future generations. The 2007–2012 Action Plan represents the crucial first steps of the very important adaptation journey for the Great Barrier Reef and its people. We are pleased to be able to share its stories in this outcomes report.en
