The Great Barrier Reef Outlook Report 2024 was prepared by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority based on the best available information. The report is required under Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (section 54) and aims to provide a regular and reliable means of assessing reef health and management in an accountable and transparent way. The Great Barrier Reef is a vast and spectacular ecosystem, renowned for its natural beauty and complex natural systems. It provides significant social, cultural, and economic benefits to Australia. However, the opportunity to secure a positive future for the Reef is rapidly diminishing. The 2024 Outlook Report identifies climate change remains the greatest threat to the Reef, with additional threats from coastal development, land-based runoff, and direct human activities (such as some fishing activities). Every increase in global warming further jeopardises the Reef's biodiversity and the associated cultural, social, and economic benefits. World-leading management, as well the Reef's sheer size, do provide this natural icon protective capacity. Prioritising actions that promote Great Barrier Reef recovery processes and limit further decline will improve the Region’s long-term outlook.
