Technical information sheet 9: New coastal areas of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

Abstract

In January 1999, the Commonwealth Minister for the Environment and Heritage announced that certain coastal areas previously excluded from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park would now be included. When the Marine Park was first declared in the late 1970s, these areas were excluded because of concerns about their potential for industrial or port developments, as well as a limited understanding of their ecological significance.
