dc.description.abstract	The concept of parks as places of beauty offering people opportunity for contemplation and recreation goes back many centuries. Parks of one kind or another have become accepted as both desirable and necessary features of modern society. Over a century ago. the concept was broadened by the identification of 'national parks' - places which were recognised as having ecological. scenic and recreational value of more than local significance and which therefore warranted special protection by governments.	en
