Technical information sheet 8: A review of zoning plans

Abstract

The Representative Areas Program (RAP) will be implemented through the rezoning of the Marine Park. Sections 32 and 33 of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 provide the legal basis for the preparation of zoning plans. In order to meet the objectives of RAP and produce consistent zoning across the whole of the Marine Park, the GBRMPA intends reviewing the existing zoning plans for the following main sections of the Marine Park: • Central Section (in operation since October 1987) • Mackay/Capricorn Section (in operation since August 1988) • Cairns Section (in operation since April 1992) • Far Northern Section (in operation since April 2002)
