The year 1979/80 was marked by the introduction of the first formal measures to ensure the long term future of the Great Barrier Reef through conservation, while encouraging continuing enjoyment of its natural beauty. Community concern for conserving the Reef was answered early in the year with the establishment of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park-Capricornia Section, and preparations towards the end of the year for a possible second section.en
