Abstract: | The Great Barrier Reef is a large marine managed area where some areas are highly protected and the rest is managed for sustainable use. Balancing the conservation needs of this iconic World Heritage Area with the legitimate needs of communities and visitors is the key challenge of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA). In presenting this Annual Report I acknowledge my fellow members of the Authority and am grateful for the skill and enthusiasm of the staff of the GBRMPA and for the cooperation of the many government departments, industry and community groups - all of whom play a significant role in protecting the Great Barrier Reef. |
